Udinese sack Kosta Runjaic and appoint Paolo Zanetti as head coach
Udinese confirmed on 2 November that Runjaic had been sacked and Zanetti appointed head coach until 30 June 2027, after five points from 10 Serie A matches.
Wednesday night in Leipzig brings RB Leipzig and Manchester City together in the UEFA Champions League. Leipzig have won three of their last five league matches; City have also won three of five, but arrive in Germany after back-to-back league defeats.
RB Leipzig's last five league results, in order, read: Bayer Leverkusen 2–0 RB Leipzig, RB Leipzig 6–0 Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich 6–1 RB Leipzig, RB Leipzig 4–0 SV Elversberg and Schalke 04 0–2 RB Leipzig. That is three wins and two defeats, with thirteen goals scored and eight conceded. The run has swung between extremes: two heavy defeats and three wins, each by at least two goals.
The home record is the strongest part of the run. Leipzig won both home matches, scoring ten goals and conceding none, with the 6–0 win over Frankfurt and the 4–0 win over Elversberg. Away from home they won one of three, at Schalke, and lost the other two, scoring three and conceding eight. They kept three clean sheets in five matches, all in their three wins, and scored in three of the five. When Leipzig have won in this run, they have won clearly; when they have lost, they have lost heavily.
Manchester City's last five league results, in order, read: Manchester City 5–3 Sunderland, Liverpool 0–3 Manchester City, Manchester City 3–2 Ipswich Town, Aston Villa 2–1 Manchester City and Manchester City 0–1 Brighton & Hove Albion. That is three wins and two defeats, with twelve goals scored and eight conceded. The first three results in the run were all wins, including the 3–0 win at Liverpool; the last two were both defeats, at Aston Villa and at home to Brighton.
City scored in four of the five matches, failing to score only in the defeat by Brighton, and kept one clean sheet, at Liverpool. Two of their three home matches were won, with eight goals scored and six conceded, while away from home they won one and lost one, scoring four and conceding two. The pattern is therefore a side that has carried a threat throughout the run but has conceded in four of five matches, and that arrives in Leipzig without a league win in its last two games.
Put the two runs side by side and they look remarkably alike. Both sides have won three and lost two, both have conceded eight goals, and Leipzig have scored one goal more, thirteen to twelve. Leipzig have kept three clean sheets to City's one, but City have scored in four matches to Leipzig's three. The difference is where the goals have come from: Leipzig scored ten goals in their two home matches, against City's eight in three, while Leipzig conceded eight goals away from home, against City's two in two away matches. If the recent pattern holds, Leipzig will look to make home advantage count, and City will need to find again the attacking form of the first three games in the run.
For Leipzig, this is a chance to move their European campaign forward from a difficult position. They have three points from their first three league-phase matches, with one win and two defeats, and they sit fourth in the Bundesliga, so a home win over one of Europe's biggest clubs would give both their league-phase hopes and their confidence a lift. A draw would keep them moving, but a defeat would leave them needing a strong finish to reach the play-off places. In the league phase, the top eight go straight through to the round of 16, teams finishing ninth to twenty-fourth enter a play-off, and the bottom twelve are eliminated.
For City, the stakes are about staying near the top of the league-phase table. They have six points from three matches, with two wins and one defeat, and a win in Leipzig would strengthen their position among the sides chasing direct qualification. A draw would still be a useful point away from home against a side fourth in its domestic league. A defeat, though, would make it three league defeats in a row and would hand Leipzig a notable home win in a run where they have already scored ten goals in two home matches.
