Tuesday night in Madrid brings together two of European football's heavyweights, as Atlético Madrid host Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. It is the kind of fixture the league phase is made for: a Spanish side built on defensive organisation meeting a Bayern side scoring freely, with both clubs in strong domestic form. Atlético have won four of their last five league matches; Bayern have won all five. A result against a fellow big club carries weight beyond the points on offer, as a marker of where each team stands among Europe's leading sides.

Atlético's form: four wins, one defeat, three clean sheets

Atlético's last five league results, in order, read: Atlético Madrid 2–1 Real Madrid, Espanyol 0–1 Atlético Madrid, Real Betis 2–1 Atlético Madrid, Atlético Madrid 3–0 Sevilla and Levante 0–2 Atlético Madrid. That is four wins and one defeat, with nine goals scored and three conceded. The run began with the 2–1 home win over Real Madrid and has ended with back-to-back wins, over Sevilla at home and at Levante.

The defensive record is the clearest feature of the run. Atlético kept three clean sheets in five matches, conceding only in the win over Real Madrid and the defeat at Real Betis. Two of the five matches were at home, and Atlético won both, scoring five goals and conceding one; away from home they won two of three, scoring four goals and conceding two. They have scored in every one of the five games, and in three of them they conceded nothing at all.

Bayern's form: five wins in five, eighteen goals scored

Bayern's last five league results, in order, read: SV Elversberg 1–2 Bayern Munich, Bayern Munich 7–0 1. FC Union Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt 2–4 Bayern Munich, SC Freiburg 1–3 Bayern Munich and FC Augsburg 1–2 Bayern Munich. That is five wins from five, with eighteen goals scored and five conceded. The margins varied, from two 2–1 away wins, at Elversberg and at Augsburg, to the 7–0 win over Union Berlin, the largest single result in either side's recent run.

Bayern's strength in this run has been on the road. Four of the five wins came away from home, with eleven goals scored and five conceded, while the one home match produced seven goals and a clean sheet. Like Atlético, Bayern have scored in every game. Unlike Atlético, they have conceded in four of the five, keeping only the one clean sheet, against Union Berlin. They have outscored every opponent in this run, conceding along the way but never more than two goals in a match.

What the numbers say

Put the two runs side by side and the contrast is sharp. Bayern have scored exactly twice as many goals as Atlético, eighteen to nine, and have won one match more. Atlético have conceded fewer goals, three to Bayern's five, and have kept three clean sheets to Bayern's one. Set Bayern's 7–0 win aside and the gap narrows but does not close: Bayern still scored eleven goals in their other four matches, against Atlético's nine in five, while Atlético still conceded only three in total.

The away records point the same way. Bayern won all four of their away matches in this run; Atlético won two of three away from home, losing only at Real Betis. Both sides have scored in every league match in the run. The difference is at the back: Atlético conceded twice away from home in three matches, Bayern five times in four. If this game follows the recent pattern, Bayern will carry the greater attacking threat and Atlético the tighter defence.

What is at stake

For Atlético, a home win would be the strongest result of their recent run: three points against one of Europe's biggest clubs, in front of their own supporters, following back-to-back league wins over Sevilla and Levante. A draw would still be a respectable outcome against a side that has won five straight league matches. A defeat would hand Bayern a notable away win to add to four away league wins already banked in this run.

For Bayern, an away win in Madrid would be a European statement to go with a perfect league run, beating a side that has conceded only three goals in its last five league matches. A draw would still take a point from one of the hardest away trips in the competition. A defeat would check the momentum of five straight league wins. Either way, the result will say something real about both clubs, because neither has faced an opponent of this stature in their recent league run.
