Saturday evening brings the biggest fixture in German club football, as Bayern Munich welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Allianz Arena for Der Klassiker. It is the meeting of the Bundesliga's two dominant forces of the modern era, and this edition arrives with an extra edge: neither side has lost any of its last five league matches. One unbeaten run, at least, will not survive the weekend — and in a rivalry like this one, that alone is enough to make it unmissable.

Bayern's form: four wins, twenty goals, no mercy at home

Bayern's last five league results read: SV Elversberg 1–2 Bayern Munich, Bayern Munich 7–0 1. FC Union Berlin, FC Augsburg 2–2 Bayern Munich, Bayern Munich 6–1 RB Leipzig and SC Freiburg 1–3 Bayern Munich. That is four wins and a single draw, with twenty goals scored and five conceded. The home form inside that run is startling: thirteen goals across just two games at the Allianz Arena, with Union Berlin beaten 7–0 and RB Leipzig 6–1. The only blemish is the 2–2 draw at Augsburg, the one match in five where Bayern conceded twice. Everywhere else, they have scored at least twice — and usually far more.

Dortmund's form: three wins, two draws, and a defence that barely blinks

Dortmund's last five tell a very different story: Borussia Dortmund 3–0 SC Paderborn 07, VfB Stuttgart 0–1 Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Dortmund 2–2 Werder Bremen, 1. FC Union Berlin 0–0 Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Dortmund 1–0 Eintracht Frankfurt. That is three wins and two draws, with seven goals scored and just two conceded — and four clean sheets in five matches. The only goals Dortmund have shipped in this run came in the 2–2 home draw with Werder Bremen; Stuttgart, Paderborn, Union Berlin and Frankfurt all failed to score against them. Dortmund do not blow teams away, but right now they are exceptionally hard to score against.

What the numbers say

The contrast between the two runs could hardly be sharper. Bayern's five matches have averaged 5.0 goals in total; Dortmund's just 1.8. Bayern have scored nearly three times as many goals as Dortmund in the same span (twenty to seven), yet they have also conceded more than twice as many (five to two). One side turns games into shootouts, the other turns them into arm-wrestles — and Saturday's winner will likely be whichever team forces its kind of game. Bayern's attack has been the Bundesliga's loudest weapon of the last five weeks; Dortmund's defence has been its quietest wall. Something has to give where those two trends meet.

Home firepower vs away steel — and a warning from the road

The venue split sharpens the picture further. Bayern are a perfect two from two at home in this run, scoring thirteen and conceding just once, with both home wins coming by six goals or more. Dortmund's away record in the same span is less spectacular but arguably more impressive in its own way: a 1–0 win at Stuttgart and a 0–0 draw at Union Berlin, with one goal scored and none conceded on the road. If Dortmund are to take anything from Munich, they will have to produce their best defensive performance of the run against the most prolific attack in it — and history offers a warning of its own. Bayern's last two home games have both ended in routs, so the visitors know exactly how unforgiving this trip can be when the hosts are in this mood.

What is at stake

For Bayern, a win would extend a run that already includes a 7–0 and a 6–1 at home, and confirm that the Allianz Arena remains the hardest ground in Germany to visit. For Dortmund, a win would be a statement of a different kind: proof that a side built on clean sheets and narrow margins can go to the home of the league's most free-scoring team and impose its own game. Both sides arrive unbeaten in five, so the first defeat of this run for either team would come in the fixture neither side wants to lose — and in Der Klassiker, bragging rights alone are worth more than most three-point hauls.
