Chelsea will be without their top scorer for the coming weeks. Manager Xabi Alonso confirmed in an official pre-match press conference on Tuesday that striker João Pedro has a thigh injury and will be out for a few weeks, starting with Wednesday night's Carabao Cup fourth-round tie at Liverpool. It is his second injury absence of the season.

What Chelsea said

Alonso gave the update on Tuesday, ahead of the trip to Anfield. The club confirmed in the press conference that João Pedro picked up the injury in training on Friday, which is why he was absent from the matchday squad for Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Further assessments have now confirmed a spell on the sidelines — but, notably, no precise return date.

"He has an injury in his thigh and he is going to be out for a few weeks," Alonso said. "Let's see how many; we don't want to predict on that, but he will not be ready for the next games. He is a key player and we will miss him, but we have to be ready to deal with the injury, be competitive and try to win games with the players we have available, starting tomorrow against Liverpool, a cup game."

That wording matters: as things stand, there is no official return date, so any specific comeback match circulating elsewhere is guesswork rather than club information.

The matches he will miss

The first confirmed absence is Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie at Anfield, where Chelsea face Liverpool at 20:00 UTC. Full details, including the lineups once they are announced, are on the Liverpool vs Chelsea match page. Alonso's "next games" phrasing also covers Saturday's Premier League visit of Manchester United to Stamford Bridge, at 12:30 UTC — see the Chelsea vs Manchester United match page.

Chelsea go to Anfield already without Cole Palmer, who is suspended after his sending-off against Tottenham, so Alonso will be without two of his most important attacking players. How far beyond the United game the absence stretches is, for now, unconfirmed — the November international break follows the next round of fixtures, but the club has not said whether João Pedro will be back before or after it.

Why losing him hurts so much

João Pedro, 25, has been Chelsea's most productive attacker this season, with five goals and three assists in seven appearances across all competitions. In the Premier League, only Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak have scored more than his five goals, and only Haaland has more direct goal involvements than his eight. He scored twice against Bournemouth and opened the scoring after 31 seconds against Fulham in August.

The early evidence of life without him is not encouraging. Chelsea have lost both Premier League games he has missed this season — 3-0 at Brentford, when a knee problem kept him out, and 2-0 at home to Tottenham on Saturday — without scoring in either. Against Spurs, Alonso pushed Morgan Rogers up front as a makeshift striker, and Chelsea looked toothless. A thigh injury is a different problem from the knee trouble that cost him time earlier in the season, but the effect is the same: no recognised number nine.

Who steps in

Alonso pointed to the depth he has built the squad for. Summer signing Emmanuel Emegha, who arrived from Strasbourg and has been building fitness after a hamstring problem, is in contention to make his Chelsea debut at Anfield — Alonso said the young striker has "special qualities" and has trained well for the last ten days. Danny Welbeck and Estêvão are also available as attacking options, and Rogers showed against Tottenham that he can fill in up front, even if Saturday's blank underlines how much the side misses a specialist.

Alonso refused to use the injury as an excuse. "This is why you build a squad," he said. "For sure, some players are important, but this can happen."

What is not yet known — and what to watch for

Three things remain unconfirmed: the exact length of the layoff, whether he will be fit for the fixtures after the international break, and who Alonso trusts to lead the line at Anfield — with Emegha's possible debut the most interesting team-news question of the night.

What is confirmed is the sequence: a training-ground injury on Friday, an absence from the Tottenham defeat, and an official update on Tuesday ruling him out for the coming weeks. ScorePulse will update this story when Chelsea give their next official word.
